Gas Conditioning and Heat and Moisture Recovery

Let's look back at how the gas conditioning and heat and moisture recovery functions occur at the cellular level.

Gas Conditioning
Inhaled air is conditioned to core temperature and saturation (100% Relative Humidity), by taking heat and moisture from the mucosa lining the respiratory tract. This process cools and dries the mucosa.

Heat and Moisture Recovery
On exhalation, the cooled mucosa induces condensation, releasing some heat and moisture back to the mucosa. This process partially rewarms and remoistens the mucosa.
