The Neonate at Risk

Delivering less than core temperature and/or less than saturated (100% RH) gases in an intubated neonate, results in moisture and heat loss from the airways. This may;

  • thicken secretions
  • compromise the mucociliary transport system, reducing airway defence
  • reduce airway patency and lung compliance
  • increase the work of breathing
  • Consume additional energy and water
  • Thickened Secretions
    Moisture and heat will be stripped from the airways if inhaled gases are delivered at less than core temperature and saturated with water vapor. This may affect fluid homeostasis and secretion consistency in the neonate. 1

    Gases which are less than core temperature and saturated will strip heat and moisture from: the endotracheal tube (1), the trachea (2) and the lower airways (3).
