When to replace CPAP therapy equipment

Regular replacement of the various mask and device parts helps ensure effective treatment for the user.

The lifespans of CPAP mask and device parts depend on the usage and cleaning regimen. It is vital all parts are regularly checked for damage. Ensuring the equipment is working at its best pays dividends in better therapy delivery. Here we detail signs of wear and tear and recommendations for when patients should replace parts.
Masks

Over time the mask seal, frame, diffuser, tube and swivel become worn and less effective, which may increase leaks. The life of the mask depends on the use, cleaning regimen and condition of the patient’s skin.

Seal
Replacement signs: Silicone seal discolouration, cracking or tearing, and not sealing as effectively.
Replace: Every 6 to 12 months.



Frame
Replacement signs: Cracked and/or discoloured appearance.
Replace: Every 12 months.



Diffuser
Replacement signs: Discoloured or dirty appearance, and exposure to dirt and dust.
Replace: Every 3 months.

 

Mask tube and swivel
Replacement signs: Tube and/or swivel shows signs of deterioration, such as tears or breaks.
Replace: Every 12 months.



Headgear
Why does it need to be replaced? Headgear stretches over time, which means the straps need to be pulled tighter. The lifespan of headgear can depend on the use, cleaning regimen and condition of a patient’s skin and hair.

Replacement signs: Headgear becomes overly stretched or stretched beyond adjustment, discoloured and the Velcro fasteners are not working.
Replace: Every 6 to 12 months.

Filter
Why do they need to be replaced? Filter replacement frequency can depend on the environment in which the CPAP device is being used. The more pet dander and hair, dust, smoke or other irritants in the air, the more regularly the filter will need replacing.

Replacement signs: Significant discolouration, 1000 or more hours’ usage and environmental factors, such as dirt, smoke and dust.
Replace: Every 3 months.



Tube
Why does it need to be replaced? Depending on usage and cleaning, CPAP tubing needs regular replacement to ensure therapy is effective.

Replacement signs: Tube shows signs of deterioration, such as tears or breaks.
Replace: Every 12 months.
 

Chamber
Why does it need to be replaced? The chamber should be inspected daily for cracks, mineral deposits or ‘cloudy’ areas. These spots may result from the type of water that is used.

Replacement signs: Cracks, oxidation and black or white mineral deposits on the bottom of the chamber. A cloudy chamber may result from continuous tap-water use.
Replace: Every 6 to 12 months.
