What is home-based mechanical ventilation?
Home-based mechanical ventilation refers to respiratory support via a ventilator for people at home or in long-term care facilities. Ventilator driven respiratory support can include the delivery of invasive, noninvasive and humidified high-flow therapy.
How does heated humidification play a role?
The lungs need warm, moist air to function effectively. For a healthy individual, some of this warmth and moisture is naturally added during the normal respiratory cycle. However, for people who are mechanically ventilated, this function can be compromised.1
A heated humidification system adds the necessary warmth and moisture to inspired air, helping to maintain a clear airway.2,3 For invasively ventilated patients, heated humidification is particularly important as the natural heating and humidifying in their upper airways is bypassed. For noninvasively ventilated patients, heated humidification may increase comfort and tolerance to treatment.4
