The AirSpiral heated breathing tube for Airvo 2 utilizes an advanced two-spiral design to help protect against condensate.

We’ve all seen it happen before. When warm, humid gas touches anything even a fraction of a degree colder than itself (i.e. dew point), it cools and generates condensate. We see it often in conventional breathing tubes made of thin, dense plastic: their surfaces are easily cooled by the outside air, resulting in unpleasant “rain-out”.

Top 7 tips for managing condensation or rain-out, i.e. achieving Optimal Humidity for your patients

AirSpiral™ is our latest innovation in humidity delivery and condensation control. We know that some environments are more challenging than others, so here are our top tips to help manage condensation (rain-out) should it occur.
Every part of our Airvo™ humidifier system plays a role in delivering Optimal Humidity to your patients. So, for best performance, use only Fisher & Paykel Healthcare’s products on your Airvo or MR850™ humidifier.
  • Why?
    • For example, the Airvo humidity algorithm communicates with the heated breathing tube to power it and the tube provides temperature information (both within the room and inside the tube) back to the algorithm.
    • The algorithm also accounts for the key characteristics of the Optiflow™ interfaces, i.e. we know the geometry of the interfaces and the nature of the materials, via our Evaqua™ technology. So, we know how to minimize condensate and deliver Optimal Humidity to the patient, for each interface in our range.
That way, if condensation does form it’ll drain back towards the water chamber, not the patient.
Don't cover the heated breathing tube with clothing, blankets, sheets or pillows. Use the tube clip provided to attach it to the top of the bed coverings and allow it to run freely (and uncovered) between the patient and the device.
In-built sensors help compensate for ambient conditions but you can help by checking the following:
  • Is there a local source of cooling activated close to or blowing on the heated breathing tube, like a fan, air-conditioning unit, or air vent?
    • If yes, are you able to remove or minimize the source, e.g. could a fan could be moved to the other side of the bed, away from the tube?
Here’s how:
  1. Disconnect the interface from the heated breathing tube.
  2. Drain the tube by lifting up the patient end of the tube.
  3. At higher flows it may be necessary to reduce the target flow rate to 30 L/min, or below, to ensure the water drains towards the chamber.
  • Please note: this will also reduce the level of humidity reaching the patient, so try the other tips first.
