What clinical evidence is there to support the use of nasal high flow (NHF)?
The current body of clinical evidence related to patient outcomes suggests that NHF is superior to conventional oxygen therapy (COT) and, in some applications, non-inferior to noninvasive ventilation (NIV) for reducing escalation; for example:
- As primary support to avoid intubation in patients with hypoxemia and/or at risk of post-operative respiratory complications after cardiothoracic surgery.
- As post-extubation respiratory support for avoiding the need for reintubation.
